BULLS TOO STRONG FOR DUNVANT WHO BATTLED BRAVELY THROUGHOUT
By Roger Knight | Sunday 3rd March 2013
Builth Wells showed why they are league leaders with a strong pack led performance. Dunvant battled bravely in attack and defence but lost 33-17
Builth had defeated Dunvant at Broadacre 7-15 and sit top of the league. They have only suffered one home defeat all season in a tight 15-16 battle against second placed Seven Sisters.
Builth kicked off and both sides were kept busy in attack and defence with some bruising tackles going in. Builth had the first penalty opportunity on 12 minutes for a high tackle near halfway, but chose to kick for a lineout and Dunvant were able to clear. Shortly after Dunvant were awarded a penalty whilst attacking but full back Adam Williams was just wide. On 20 minutes, Builth won a penalty on our 10 meter line which was kicked to touch. From the lineout they won another penalty on the 22 which was again kicked to touch. From that lineout the maul was set and hooker Ben Pugh went over for the first try, converted by outside half Luke Offa for 7-0.
From the restart, Dunvant were awarded a penalty for being tackled without use of the arms and full back Adam Williams was successful for 7-3. Builth won another penalty on 25 minutes about 30 metres out but Luke Offa kicked it wide. Another long range penalty from 45 metres for Dunvant on the half hour was kicked wide by Adam Williams.
With five minutes left to half time the Bulls mounted a strong and sustained attck leading to lock forward Ryan Beehan scoring, converted by Luke Offa for 14-3. Dunvant were forced into making two substitutions with flanker Lewis Buckley sustaining an ankle knock early on, and inside centre Danny Davies looking somewhat dazed and concussed as he walked off.
Dunvant felt they were still in this game with half time looming but Builth struck a killer blow with a third try, again scored by Ryan Beehan, and again converted by Luke Offa during added time for 21-3. Adam Williams had another chance of a penalty kick but was well wide, so half time score 21-3.
Dunvant restarted the second half and within 2 minutes broke through for inside centre Sam Crowley to score under the posts, replacement Richard Lewis, playing at outside half was successful with the conversion for 21-10. Dunvant were dominant in the third quarter and it really looked as if they could turn this game round, with Builth getting little possession and all the game being played in Builth territory.
The game turned against Dunvant on the hour when, with Dunvant again attacking on Builth’s 10 metre line, tried to pass the ball on the touchline and a long kick from Builth right winger took them down to Dunvant’s 22 for the first time this half. Builth then mounted 10 minutes of sustained pressure which Dunvant defended magnificently, Builth being held up twice on the line before flanker Jeff Evans Turner went over near the posts, Offa converted, 28-10.
Dunvant never gave up and with 39 minutes elapsed, (although a lot of stoppages for physios to patch up players on both sides), winger Craig Lewis scored, converted by Richard Lewis for 28-17. AS the game went into added time, Dunvant no 8 was yellow carded for tackling without use of the arms, although it appeared to be an innocent collision, and even Builth supporters thought it was a harsh decision. As a final party piece for their supporters, Builth outside centre Sam Gillan scored a 5th try in the right hand corner which Offa could not convert for a final scoreline of 33-17.
This was a really gutsy performance by Dunvant against a strong side with a forward pack built on pick and go play who are deservedly the league leaders. Dunvant have to take positives out of this display, even though today’s results show all the other losing sides picked up valuable losing bonus points.
Now we are again faced with a three week break before we play Crymych at Broadacre on 23rd March. How ridiculous is it that when we play Crymych on 23rd March it will only be our FIFTH game in FOURTEEN weeks!!! Sort it out Welsh Rugby Union!!! Don’t forget the Community clubs are the foundation for any rugby to be played at a higher level. Community Clubs are not getting the support they need to survive and attract new players., particularly with the success of Swansea City and Cardiff City attracting hoards of youngsters to football on a Saturday afternoon.
